Banishing the «myths» of Free Software

Free software is a technological revolution that has changed the way of understanding the users’ freedom, the legal environment, development processes and economic model. The operation of services based on Free Software offers a highly profitable economic model, especially for SMEs and micro ICT solution providers, allowing access to the knowledge required for the operation of a host of professional solutions without paying licenses. However, the chances of this model are not being fully exploited by the industry. There are many myths about Free Software hinder its deployment in companies providing technology and consequently for business users. These myths, increasingly outdated, often spread by ignorance and rejection innate people to accept the changes.

MYTH: Free Software is not a profitable business model
This is perhaps one of the most repeated myths among traditional software companies comes from the fact that until many years the business of ICT companies was in the sale of licenses and hardware. In the last decade has shown that the real business is in selling value added services and that only large corporations with a monopoly-like situation can base their model on licensing fees. Free Software offers the opportunity for smaller ICT companies to compete with larger ones, since it provides access to many resources and applications ready to exploit commercially.

MYTH: Free Software is not quality
One of the thousands of examples that demystify this idea is that Google uses and develops all kinds of free software. But there are many large companies also rely on the quality of free software such as IBM, HP, Oracle, Microsoft, NASA, Airbus and a long etcetera.
